NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Indulging in chocolate during pregnancy could help ward off a serious complication known as preeclampsia, new research suggests.

Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, is rich in a chemical called theobromine, which stimulates the heart, relaxes smooth muscle and dilates blood vessels, and has been used to treat chest pain, high blood pressure, and hardening of the arteries, Dr. Elizabeth W. Triche of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut and colleagues write.

But the image that viewers may find most shocking is that of a baby being cut out of a woman’s abdomen via Caesarean. Coffee ‘raises miscarriage risk’

Pregnant women should consider avoiding caffeine, say researchers who found even moderate consumption in early pregnancy raises the miscarriage risk.

Currently, the Food Standards Agency sets an upper limit during pregnancy of 300mg - or four cups of coffee a day.

Changes in the thickness of the uterus lining or “endometrium” during in vitro fertilisation predict the likelihood of pregnancy, according to a report in the journal Fertility and Sterility.

“Good-prognosis patients will experience an endometrial response quickly,” Dr John L Frattarelli told Reuters Health.

“Patients who have a slower endometrial response have significantly worse pregnancy outcomes.”

Frattarelli from Reproductive Medicine Associates of New Jersey, Somerset, and Dr. Grant D E McWilliams assessed how changes in endometrial thickness are associated with pregnancy in 132 women undergoing in vitro fertilisation, a common treatment for infertility. Continue reading »

New pregnancy research could cause another bump for food industry

16/08/2007 - The snacks industry has taken another hit this week after researchers suggest eating junk food during pregnancy and breastfeeding may lead to obese offspring.

The study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, found that rats fed doughnuts, muffins, biscuits, crisps and sweets during pregnancy and lactation gave birth to offspring that preferred these types of foods.
