Diabetes in Pregnancy Is on the Rise

April 29th, 2008

Story found on U.S.News.

Having poorly controlled diabetes while pregnant can cause all sorts of harm, from stillbirths and miscarriages to birth defects. So experts are concerned that the number of women who already have diabetes by the time they conceive is rising rapidly: Between 1999 and 2005, the group doubled in size, growing significantly across all age, racial, and ethnic groups examined by Kaiser Permanent Southern California researchers, who report their findings in May’s Diabetes Care. Different from gestational diabetes, a temporary type that some women develop well into pregnancy, prepregnancy diabetes can pose more of a threat to a developing fetus. Continue reading »

LONDON (AFP) - Children who attend day care or playgroups have a 30 percent lower risk of developing leukaemia, US researchers said Tuesday ahead of a presentation of their findings to experts in London.

The conclusion was based on a review of 14 studies involving 6,108 children with leukaemia — cancer of the blood — and 13,704 without the condition led by Dr Patricia Buffler, from the University of California, Berkeley.

“Overall, we are seeing a 30 percent reduction in leukaemia risk for the children who have been in playgroups, (and) have had the opportunity of the social experience of being around other children early in life compared to children who don’t have those experiences,” she told BBC television. FDA weighs safety of cold drugs for kids

October 18th, 2007

Cold and cough medicines recently pulled from sale for infants and toddlers shouldn’t be given to children as old as 5, either, pediatricians told government health advisers Thursday.

Parents use religion to avoid vaccines

October 18th, 2007

Story found on YahooNews.

Sabrina Rahim doesn’t practice any particular faith, but she had no problem signing a letter declaring that because of her deeply held religious beliefs, her 4-year-old son should be exempt from the vaccinations required to enter preschool.

She is among a small but growing number of parents around the country who are claiming religious exemptions to avoid vaccinating their children when the real reason may be skepticism of the shots or concern they can cause other illnesses. Some of these parents say they are being forced to lie because of the way the vaccination laws are written in their states. Continue reading »

16/08/2007 - The snacks industry has taken another hit this week after researchers suggest eating junk food during pregnancy and breastfeeding may lead to obese offspring.

The study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, found that rats fed doughnuts, muffins, biscuits, crisps and sweets during pregnancy and lactation gave birth to offspring that preferred these types of foods.

This new research comes as the food industry is under pressure from the governmental campaigns to avoid the rising obesity crisis. Continue reading »
