FDA weighs safety of cold drugs for kids

Cold and cough medicines recently pulled from sale for infants and toddlers shouldn’t be given to children as old as 5, either, pediatricians told government health advisers Thursday.

The expert advisers to the Food and Drug Administration began a two-day meeting to consider a petition from the pediatricians that seeks in part a government statement saying the over-the-counter medicines shouldn’t be used in children under 6 because they don’t help them and aren’t safe. Parents use religion to avoid vaccines

Sabrina Rahim doesn’t practice any particular faith, but she had no problem signing a letter declaring that because of her deeply held religious beliefs, her 4-year-old son should be exempt from the vaccinations required to enter preschool.

She is among a small but growing number of parents around the country who are claiming religious exemptions to avoid vaccinating their children when the real reason may be skepticism of the shots or concern they can cause other illnesses.
